<공연소개>
전후 실존주의 발레 & 유럽적 극발레의 거장 롤랑 프티
유럽 발레 100년간의 산 증인 롤랑 프티는 1924년에 태어나 파리 오페라 발레 학교에 입학(1933년)해 1940년에 코르드발레로 입단한다. 솔리스트 승급(1943년) 이후 20살에 안무에 전념하기 위해 발레단을 나와 초기 작품들을 안무하다가 1945년에 샹젤리제 발레단을 만든다. ‘유랑극단’, ‘랑데부’ ‘젊은이와 죽음’과 같은 실존주의 발레가 당시 만들어진 대표작들이며, ‘젊은이와 죽음(1946)’은 전방위 예술가 장 콕토가 대본을 쓴 롤랑 프티의 두 번째 작품으로 미하일 바리시니코프의 영화 ‘백야’로도 잘 알려진 발레이다. 이후 세계적인 명성을 얻기 시작해 런던과 헐리우드에서 다양한 활동을 펼친 후 파리에 돌아와 미국식 뮤지컬 형식을 프랑스 발레에 결합시키는 작품들을 발표하기도 했다. 이후 로열발레단의 누레예프와 폰테인을 위해 안무하기도 했고, 라스칼라 극장은 물론 파리 오페라 발레단을 위해 다양한 안무를 했다. 1970년 국립 파리 오페라 발레단의 예술감독으로 짧은 기간 재임하다 1972년 마르세이유 발레단을 창설한다. 유럽의 주요 극장들은 물론 헐리우드 무대까지 섭렵했던 현존하는 유일한 전시대 전설적 안무가 롤랑 프티의 무대를 최초로 국립발레단이 선사하게 된다. 국립발레단이 7월에 올리게 될 롤랑 프티 ‘트리플빌’에서는 반 고흐의 한 작품을 보는듯한 남불 프로방스 풍경의 ‘아를르의 여인’의 무대, 장 콕토의 대본과 그림 등을 엿볼 수 있음은 물론 국내에서는 1980년대 후반에 큰 히트를 쳤던 모운동복 회사의 CF를 통해서도 잘 알려진 ‘젊은이와 죽음’, 비제의 오페라로도 유명할 뿐 아니라 매력적인 캐릭터들로 다양하게 안무됐던 ‘카르멘’, 그중에서도 가장 고전적인 명작이자 가장 많은 인기를 끌었던 롤랑 프티의 ‘카르멘’을 볼 수 있다. 롤랑 프티의 ‘카르멘’은 당시로서는 파격적이자 선정적었던 의상과 안무, 도발적인 헤어스타일 등의 이유로 엄청난 반향을 몰고온 작품이다. 다시 현재에서 보아도 새롭기 그지없는 롤랑 프티의 명작을 만난다.
파리 오페라 발레단, 라스칼라 발레단의 레퍼토리를 서울에서!
국립발레단이 7월에 올릴 롤랑 프티의 세 작품은 현재 국립 파리 오페라 발레단과 밀라노 라스칼라 발레단의 레퍼토리로 공연되고 있는 작품들이다. 최초 한국에서 공연되는 롤랑 프티 ‘트리플빌’을 위해 롤랑 프티는 기꺼이 5년 라이센스를 허락하고, 국립발레단이 서울에서 그의 작품을 올리는 것에 대한 기쁨을 숨기지 않았다. 이번 한국 공연을 위해 롤랑 프티의 모든 오리지널 스탭들이 대거 내한해 파리와 밀라노 무대에서와 같은 수준 높은 공연을 올리기 위해 노력을 아끼지 않을 예정이다. 무대•조명 디자이너 장-미셸 데지레, 의상 디자이너 필립 비노, 솔리스트 지도 트레이너 루이지 보니노 그리고 코르드 지도 트레이너 장-필립 알노 등이 직접 내한해 국립발레단과 또 다른 환상의 하모니를 보여줄 예정이다.

* 롤랑 프티
1924년 프랑스 빌몽블(Villemomble) 출생의 무용가이자 안무가이다. 1933년 파리오페라발레 학교에 입학해, 1939년 국립파리오페라 발레단에 입단하였으나 1944년 발레단을 나와, 이듬해 샹젤리제발레단을 결성, 《유랑 연예인》 《젊은이와 죽음》 등을 상연하였다. 또 1948년에는 롤랑 프티 파리 발레단을 조직하여 《밤의 숙녀들》《카르멘》《다이아몬드를 깨무는 여자》 등을 선보이고, 1953년 재조직 후에는 《이리》《24시간의 상(喪)》 등을 상연하여 제2차 세계대전 후의 발레계에 새 바람을 불러일으켰다. 그 후 1954년 역시 국립 파리오페라 발레단 무용수였던 지지 장메르(Zizi Jeanmaire)와 결혼하여 그녀를 주역으로 한 작품들에 정열을 쏟았다. 발레에는 《실낙원》(1967) 《투랑가리라》(1968) 《노트르 담 드 파리》(1965) 등의 걸작이 있다. 1960년에는 영화 《블랙 타이츠》를 제작하고, 1969년부터 카지노 드 파리를 운영하였다. 1972년에 《핑크 플로이드 발레》로 마르세이유 발레단을 창설하여 26년간 예술감독직을 맡았다. .

A day which ought to have been one of happiness, the joy of two families at last reunited: the long-awaited marriage of these two young lovers in Provence: Frederi and Vivette. What fears! What tears had preceded their engagement! But today the families can tie their bonds of prosperity and fullness together: the young have said 'yes' How lovely Vivette is! How proud she feels to introduce her beloved to everyone! And how strong Frederi is! How judicious! Has he not forever and solemnly sealed his heart to the girl from Arles?
But all of a sudden the recollection of that 'woman of prohibited passionate love' returns more vividly, tenaciously and more realistically than any witness to the 'marriage' Frederi forgets everything and everyone, Vivette and the others. He only has eyes for the shadow of 'his' Arlesienne. And as he dances hopelessly only with that phantom, he is convinced that every man is dancing with her shadow. He is blinded by the red veil of jealousy. Vivette has spied on him and realizes that Frederi is no longer hers. She attempts to drag, or rather carry him away, by now a broken-down body. But Frederi 'has death in his eyes' and madness in his heart...
Thus the inhabitants of the farmhouse can believe in a possible agreement. The young men and girls drag the newly-weds into a wild farandole. The wedding night will be one of mourning, the bridal chamber a tomb. The blazing Van Gogh sky closes and descends like lead into the ill-fated couple. With a cry, Frederi, overcome by forbidden love, flings himself into space...

< Carmen >
-Scene one-
From a building in a crowded street in Seville comes the noise of an uproar. A woman rushes down the stairs, with Carmen in hot pursuit. The two women come to blows and Carmen is on the point of committing murder. Don Jose intervenes, but takes an instant fancy to her and decides to follow her.
-Scene two-
In a tavern, Jose dances to the notes of a habanera; Carmen allows others to court her but then kneels before Jose who wraps her in his cloak and escapes with her.
-Scene three-
In Carmen's bedroom, Jose is smoking. The woman launches into an erotic dance, then goes to the window and looks out. Jose's jealousy is aroused and again he possesses her. Enter three of Carmen's friends, who whisper something into her ear.
-Scene four-
At night, in a deserted Seville street, a brief conspiracy takes place. Jose has been persuaded to kill for money. He lays into a man and robs him. But Carmen and her companions seize the stolen money and flee, pursued by the murderer.
-Scene five-
In the plaza de toros, jubilant girls await the torero. When he arrives, borne in triumph, he greets and courts his admirers. Standing aside, Carmen attracts his attention. The crowd follows the bullfighter into the arena. As Carmen moves to join the procession, the jealous Jose bursts onto the scene. A long struggle ensues between the two lovers. At its climax Carmen flings herself at Jose who stabs her. She collapses and dies. Hats are thrown onto the ground.
