줄거리
서막
크리스마스 이브의 거리
크리스마스 이브. 오늘은 마리네 집에서 크리스마스 파티가 열리는 날입니다. 흥겨운 파티를 즐기기 위해 멋지게 차려 입은 동네사람들이 마리네 집으로 향합니다.
1막 1장
크리스마스 파티가 한창인 마리네 집 거실
마리네 집 거실에서는 즐거운 파티가 한창입니다. 어른들은 담소를 나누고 어린이들은 화려하게 장식된 크리스마스 트리 주위를 돌며 흥겹게 춤을 춥니다. 이때 가면을 쓴 마리의 대부, 드로셀마이어가 등장합니다. 하지만 가면 때문에 아이들은 그가 누구인지 몰라봅니다. 드로셀마이어는 어린이들에게 지팡이를 서게 하는 마술을 보여줍니다. 신기한 모습에 아이들이 즐거워하자 이번에는 커튼 뒤에 숨겨 두었던 태엽인형을 꺼내 선보입니다. 높이 솟아 뛰는 할리퀸과 빙그르르 도는 콜롬빈, 깜짝춤을 보여주는 여자 악마와 남자 악마를 보자 아이들은 박수를 치며 좋아합니다. 이에 드로셀마이어는 가면을 벗어 박수에 화답합니다. 마술사가 드로셀마이어 아저씨였음을 안 아이들은 더욱 즐거워합니다. 아저씨는 몇몇 아이들에게 크리스마스 선물을 전달합니다. 마리가 받은 선물은 호두까기인형입니다. 셈이 난 프릿츠는 마리의 호두까기 인형으로 장난을 치다 인형을 망가트리고 마리는 속상한 마음에 그만 눈물을 쏟습니다. 밤이 깊어지자 어른들은 축배를 들며 마지막 춤을 춘 뒤 아이들을 재우러 갑니다.
1막 2장
한밤중의 마리네 집 거실
잠에서 깬 마리는 망가진 호두까기 인형이 걱정되어 한밤중에 거실로 내려가봅니다. 망가진 호두까기 인형을 품에 안고 스르르 잠에 든 마리는 꿈나라를 여행합니다. 드로셀마이어가 마법사가 되어 나타나고, 그의 마법에 걸린 물건들이 움직이기 시작합니다. 크리스마스 트리가 거대하게 자라고 트리 밑에 놓여 있던 각 나라의 인형들도 생명을 얻어 살아 움직입니다. 부서졌던 호두까기 인형까지 말입니다. 그 때 갑자기 생쥐들이 나타나서 인형들에게 겁을 줍니다. 호두까기 인형은 장난감 인형들을 이끌고 생쥐들과 한바탕 전쟁을 벌입니다. 호두까기 인형과 쥐 왕의 결투에서 호두까기 인형이 위험에 빠집니다. 마리는 드로셀마이어가 가르쳐준 대로 불 붙인 초를 쥐 왕에게 던져 쥐들을 전멸시킵니다. 마리와 인형들이 쓰러진 호두까기 인형을 일으키려는 순간 갑자기 주위가 캄캄해졌다가 다시 밝아지더니 호두까기 인형이 멋진 왕자로 변합니다. 멋진 호두까기 왕자님은 고마움의 표시로 마리에게 크리스마스 랜드로 함께 여행할 것을 제안합니다. 크리스마스 랜드로 향하는 길에 마법의 눈송이들을 만나 함께 춤을 추고, 배를 타고 해저나라를 지나 마리는 하늘로 올라갑니다. 장난감 인형들도 마리와 왕자를 따라갑니다.
2막
크리스마스 랜드
하늘 높이 올라가다 보니 반짝이는 큰 별 하나가 점점 가까워집니다. 드디어 그들은 크리스마스 트리 꼭대기에 도착하네요. 그 때 어느새 따라온 쥐들이 나타나 다시 전투가 벌어지지만 멋진 호두까기 왕자님은 가볍게 승리합니다. 마리와 왕자는 승리의 기쁨에 행복해하고 인형들은 두 사람을 위해 축하의 춤을 춥니다. 스페인춤, 인도춤, 중국춤, 러시아춤, 프랑스춤에 이어 화려한 꽃의 왈츠가 시작됩니다. 그리고 마지막으로 마리와 왕자가 환상의 2인무를 추면서 행복한 결혼식을 올립니다.
에필로그
크리스마스 아침
잠에서 깬 마리는 모든 것이 꿈이었음을 알게 됩니다. 호두까기 인형을 품에 안은 마리는 지난밤의 환상적인 꿈을 떠올리며 들뜬 마음에 크리스마스 아침을 맞이합니다.

Prologue
Streets on Christmas Eve
It is Christmas Eve, a day for a party at Marie’s house. Decently dressed people head to the house for the party
Act 1 Scene 1
Living Room where the Party Goes on
A joyful party has already started under the Christmas tree. The children merrily dance around the Christmas tree. Disguised Drosselmeyer, Marie’s godfather, shows up wearing a mask. The children cannot recognize him. Drosselmeyer shows the children a magic. He makes his cane stand up straight. Now, it is time for the wind-up toys to dance. Harlequin shows off the high jumps. Colombina presents smooth spinning moves, and He-Devil displays violent and startling dance together with She-Devil. The children love them all. Off with the mask, it is Drosselmeyer, the godfather of Marie and Fritz. Marie and Fritz are each given a Christmas present from him. Marie got the somewhat clumsy-looking Nutcracker. Fritz, the naughty boy, is jealous and breaks the toy accidentally. Drosselmeyer soothes the sad girl. As the evening wears on, the adults enjoy their final dance toasting each other and take their children to bed.
Act 1 Scene 2
Living Room in the Middle of the Night
Late at night, Marie comes down to the living room, worried about her Nutcracker. She embraces the sick Nutcracker and falls asleep, dreaming a wonderful dream where Drosselmeyer shows up in her living room as a real magician. At the wave of his hand, everything around him shifts, suddenly the Christmas tree begins to grow enormously, and with it the toys from diverse countries are brought to life, even the broken Nutcracker.
Just then, the mice appear with their Mouse King. The toys are terrified. The Nutcracker marshals the toys and leads them into battle with the mouse army. The Nutcracker falls in danger in a duel against the Mouse King. Marie, as Drosselmeyer taught her, throws a lit candle at the Mouse King, and the mice go panic and disperse in all directions. As Marie and the toys hurry to the Nutcracker’s aid, suddenly all the lights go out, and when the brightness is back, the old Nutcracker is now a wonderful Prince.
The fine Prince Nutcracker shows Marie around Christmas Land as an expression of his gratitude. On the way to Christmas Land, they dance with the magical snowflakes, travel under the sea in their boat and set off on high into the sky. The toys follow in their trail.
Act 2
Christmas Land
Soaring up into the sky, Marie and the Nutcracker come close to a large star. Finally they have arrived at the top of the Christmas tree. But then again, the mice catch them up and Prince Nutcracker engages in battle. The Mouse King is easily defeated. Marie and Prince Nutcracker are overjoyed with the victory and the toys start to dance in celebration. The Spanish dance, Indian dance, Chinese dance and the French dance. And then comes the enchanting flower Waltz. In the end, Marie and Prince Nutcracker hold a happy and fantastic wedding ceremony dancing their pas de deux.
Epilogue
Christmas Morning
It was all just a fanciful dream. A new day dawns and Marie wakes up on Christmas morning smiling at the thought of last night’s enchanting dream. Merry Christmas to you all!
